Communication/Homework folder and Assignment Sheet - The BEST thing you, as a parent, can do to help your child this year is to go through this folder with him/her each night. The communication/homework folder should come home EVERY night with the assignment sheet. The students are to copy the assignments from the chalkboard and then check them off as completed. This is their responsibility, but I try to help as much as I can. Any work that is not finished at school becomes homework and should be completed and returned the next day. Graded work and school notes should also be in the folder.
Yoga/Balance Ball- These have become a popular alternative to chairs when sitting at desks. If you are interested in purchasing one for your child to use, see me for a contract. This is a privilege and rules will need to be followed.
Water bottles- Water bottles are optional. The students are welcome to have a water bottle, but only water, in class. This is a privilege that can be lost if it becomes a problem.
Mini-Economy – Each child will have a job in our classroom with certain responsibilities. They will receive pay for their work and will be charged at times for different things. This works well. The students will be able to tell you more about it in a few weeks.
What will we be doing in class this year? (Overview)
(Reading)- The school adopted reading program will be the primary sources of instruction, but we will incorporate other materials such as novels throughout the year. Most days we have a silent reading time. For this time the students will also be required to select and read grade appropriate books on their own. The students will present to the class, book talks over these books. This is the year that students must pass the new Indiana standardized test called I-Read3. This is a state test, but is not a part of the new ILearn test. We will send home more information about this in the spring.
(Spelling/Phonics)- Weekly spelling lists will usually come home the Friday before and be available on our new Weebly Classroom Website. A trial test will be on Thursday with a final test on Friday. If they make a 100% on the trial test, no need to take the Friday test.
(English and Writing) – Weekly we cover a grammar skill with usually a quiz on Friday. We also focus on written composition.
(Handwriting)- Third grade is the official year to master and use cursive writing. We also will be using white wide-ruled notebook paper. This is a change from second grade.
(Math) –Third grade mathematics is challenging. We will be using a new math series, Envison. It will take a while for the students and I to get used to it but we will. Hopefully, students already have their addition and subtraction facts mastered because we will start on multiplication right away.
(Social Studies/Science)- We will alternate between Science and Social Studies during the year. This is the first time the students will receive report card grades in these content areas.
Central numbers are 653-6175 and 1-888-586-9217.
